The new EP by Shenoda

Available at Beatport, and soon at all better music shops.

Departed
Artist: Shenoda

Up next on Fresh Meat is UK artist Shenoda with his aptly titled “Feelings EP”. Shenoda’s “Feelings” are deep and emotional while his tracks are percussive, chugging and mind bending without doubt. Like his prior releases on Fresh Meat, Hairy Claw, and Hypercolour the tunes featured here are cerebral dance floor heaters.

The opening track “Departed” is fathomless like the ocean but maintains a thumping trackiness. Upfront percussion and subliminal sounds unite to form a compelling relentless groove. For the remix, Mazi and Justin Long reunite as Wasted Chicago Youth to deliver a left of center, disco psychotic workout. The boys play with field recordings of children and various atmospheric sounds from the original, manipulating these elements into their own special organ-centric romp. An otherworldly Jupiter 8 solo sharpens the otherwise sub-bass heavy sauntering rework.

Shenoda’s second original, Groggy Head, dives even deeper swinging wide with righteous funk. This is real modern House Music with roots. Expect to see hands in the air if you play “Groggy Head,” with its tuneful groove and vocal commands – “Show me how you!” For the remix we enlisted Fresh Meat artist Densmore for a discerning remix clocking in at a sexy 113 beats per minute. Densmore’s mix builds slowly and gracefully with elements from the original and new percussion building the track into a mid-tempo dance floor grinder. Reminiscent of his “Washington Park” project with Cort, this new remix oozes with the hi-fi bump and grind that heads everywhere will soon recognize as Albany New York’s signature sound.

The new EP by Densmore & Cort

Available at Beatport, and soon at all better music shops.

Let’s Please This Sun
Artist: Densmore & Cort

Densmore & Cort’s “Washington Park” EP is easily the most gorgeously deep and atmospheric music Fresh Meat has released this year. The Troy, New York duo’s slow thick house productions seep lush pleasures, poetics and seduction.

In the spirit of Jackie’s “Sun, Sun, Sun” the project opens with “Let’s Please This Sun”, a beautiful tribute to the central body of our solar system. Pads, evocative strings, resonate drones, and other synths exalt the light and heat which emanate from this soft elegant track.

“(re)”, a speculative slow groove, is propelled by emotional outbursts, lovely keys, and Densmore & Cort’s provocative drum programming. The drums and key stabs heat up through the last half of the track transforming the music’s abstract structure into a subtle dance floor grinder.

“Cream” with its vibraphones and ultra sweet vibe was the original Densmore & Cort track picked up by Fresh Meat and was released on the mix album and compilation When Bad People Cook Good Food Volume 2 earlier this year. As a Beatport exclusive, we present Densmore’s (George Washburn’s) slightly thickened-up retouch. With new voices and programming, the remix is more percussive and dance floor but retains all the music and atmosphere of the original.

The sun is pleased.

DJ FEEDBACK

[ Sleazy McQueen ] – Densmore has been making irregular tech house marked by not-so-common rhythms and I’m loving it like a beautiful bastard child!

[ Scope ] – That’s a really nice release.. Very different from the usual FM fare, but very much welcome! I like the mix of disco vibes with the deep house atmospherics. Lovely production!

[ Jim Rivers ] – Loving the deepness. Let’s Please This Sun is so lush!

[ MANIK ] – Nice work guys. My man Densmore know what’s up…his remix of Cream is my pick. These guys are represetin’ NY properly.

[ Brett Johnson ] – Some really lush bizness here. I like.

[ Chloe Harris ] – Amazing. Let’s Please is stunning. The whole EP is very good.

[ Stuart Patterson ] – Great EP of deep shit…going for Let’s Please This Sun and (re).

[ Charles Webster ] – ‘Let’s Please…’ is nice deepness. I could have done without the washed over saxxy ambient stuff but I like the vibe of the chords etc. Thanks.

[ Kate Simko ] – Nice, deep + dubby sound! Great artwork too!

[ Alland Byallo ] – Cream and the Densmore remix are dope!

[ Nick Warren ] – Cream remastered is the one for me.

[ Diz ] – Mid-tempo deepness! Definitely need more of this in the set. Respect.

[ Nick Harris ] – Wow, super deep stuff here, nice to see Fresh Meat going its own path with some varied releases of late. The Densmore mix just edges it here.

[ Bearweasel ] – Fresh!

[ Nico De Ceglia ] – Deeeep and quality.

Call of Grace
Artist: Audio Soul Project

VINYL ONLY

Audio Soul Project’s “Call of Grace” marks a new beginning for Fresh Meat. This single is the start of our ongoing ‘Vinyl Only’ series. Those of us laboring at FMR HQ love the weekly ritual of buying music at local record shops. It just feels right that our little imprint fully support this love affair with wax.

The original “Call of Grace” is a soul stirring tune that features vocals by Chicago mainstay Ron Carroll; a man with decades of experience. Starting with subtle improvisations, Carroll’s chant “Raise your hands” evolves in layers, invoking believers to the dance floor. Mazi’s latest production is the antithesis of derivative music choking digi-shops. Live percussion, 909 cymbals and kick, stacked claps and rhythm effects all chug feverishly under layers of organ, piano and synthesis. Orchestral string stabs escalate the vibe completing a statement emblematic of the Windy City.

It took some time to find remixers for this package. Our debut tribute to the phonograph needed exactly the right feel; timelessness. Inspired by his impeccable “Drink Your Juice” EP, we thought MANIK would fit the bill. We weren’t wrong. MANIK’s version is low slung and beautifully down tempo NYC deep house. Clocking in at a smooth 116 beats per minute, this elegant remix utilizes skippy electric pianos, staccato bass notes and signature vintage drum machine cadences.

Freerange wunderkind Milton Jackson brings this package home with a shining example of why his skills have been in demand year after year. Loose fluttering beats accompany three levels of bass echoing Glenn Underground’s classic “Detroitism”. Warbling tight pads juxtapose against synth stabs completing the foundation for Carroll’s uplifting vamps.

Me
Artist: Hans Thalau

Much like his music, the talented Hans Thalau came to Fresh Meat’s attention organically through praise from our friend Matthias Vogt. The two originals offered here, “And I” and “Me”, are subtle groovers utilizing a stylish economy. They are quintessentially Fresh Meat in that they make temporal pigeon holes useless. Hans’ music is of the kind experienced House DJs will return to time and time again. His previous work for labels like Ferox, Moonpool and Trenton have found their way into the record bags of major players like Jimpster, Josh Wink, DJ Deep, Ewan Pearson and Anja Schneider.

The original version of “Me” is a tasteful builder. Shiny drum machine percussion is wedged against a single oscillator bouncing bass line and coated with electric piano, a filtered saw pad and ghostly male vocal chants. On remix duties we enlist the considerable talents of matchmaker Matthias Vogt (of Motorcitysoul fame). Matthias keeps the bass line and vocal chants of the original intact adding layers of new hypnotically insistent synths lines. Vogt’s delicate touch moves the track almost into psychedelic territory teasing and twisting each element to its most outward reaching cosmic limit. We love House music like this that shakes the hips while reaching into the imagination.

“And I” original version has more snap and crackle to it. Female vocal snippets play with shakers, a tidy discoesque bass line, tripping keys, a whirling mono pad and reverberated space tom-tom knock. There’s just a bit more jak in “And I”, which is why our Nathan Drew Larsen took the helm for a heady reworking. While Hans’ productions are unapologetically square, Nathan shoots from the hip with a loose improvised approach. He begins by layering live rhythm parts and sampled objects followed by unquantized analog drums. Nathan keeps the vocal stabs running them less regularly, and plays innocently with the original’s main stabs bending them to the will of his Chicago-centric chugging party machine. He keeps the jaunt together with three layers of bass; one echoing the percussion, the second talking back to the toms and the last bellowing from his beloved Moog Voyager into subsonic space.

The new EP by Wasted Chicago Youth

Available on Beatport, and soon at all better music shops.

Dustbin Boogie Woogie
Artist: Wasted Chicago Youth

Coming just after their mix album “Live at Smart Bar” Mazi and Justin Long return as Wasted Chicago Youth to Fresh Meat Records with three tracks of modern American house music. “Dustbin Boogie Woogie” follows-up on the jackin’ sound these turntable extremists set forth on labels like Tuning Spork, Cynosure, and .Dotbleep, but this time the duo push the Chicago edge even further. You don’t hear much talk of chemistry between producers, but there is that indefinable quality between Mazi and Justin, animated by alchemical tensions and dialogs between the raw and refined, produced and free-form, modern and classic, and melody and atonality. Put simply, Wasted Chicago Youth is something special that Mazi and Justin only create together.

Words do no justice to the effect of “Dustbin Boogie Woogie” on a dance floor. The title track is beautifully produced and full of hooks, whoops, hollers and horns, yet it maintains a perfect tracky epistemology throughout. This is the (unfortunately) rare track that is for both mixer and dancer. “Van Gogh’s Ear” is similarly hook laden and dancey, yet this time the vibe is more hypnotic. For Van Gogh’s Ear, the Jazz of Dustbin is traded for pad keys and Blues laden vocal stabs, masking another characteristically delicate and complex WCY production. The third tune, “One Eye Open” is a heady psychedelic track that winds and grooves with synthesized live modulated horns. Mazi’s voice is stacked over Justin’s bass line in unison to create a husky primitive vibe for the club. Check out what everyone’s dancing to in Chicago.

DJ FEEDBACK

[ Tony Humphries ] – Chicago in da house! Nice tracks!

[ Stel ] – Ridiculously good. One of the best releases on FMR in recent memory!

[ Phonogenic ] – The insanity known as “Van Gogh’s Ear” is my pick here. Psykotik!

[ Giom ] – Awesome stuff, Dustbin is the one!! Will play out, thanks for this.

[ Sven von Thülen (Watergate) ] – Dustbin Boogie Woogie all the way.

[ DJ Mes ] – Another top notch release from WCY! Haunting, quirky, and just right. One eye open reminds me of a modern Gemini release, great work!

[ Slam ] – Love the WCY stuff – most excellent.

[ Luke McKeehan (Nordic Trax) ] – Dope ass beats as to be expected.

[ Murray Richardson ] – Another proper house EP from Fresh Meat! – quality!!! – Van Gogh’s Ear is the stand out track for me!

[ Xpress 2 ] – Van Gogh’s Ear is the best.

[ Deepchild ] – I’m always a sucka for some WCY. Full support. Mad-fruity, crunchy wobbly goodness. JUICY!

[ Fine Cut Bodies ] – Fun klezmerhouse!

[ Luke Solomon ] – Killer!

[ Shur-I-Kan ] – Quirky fun house – nice!

[ DJ Heather ] – More good stuff from the hometown House soldiers. Feelin Dustbin Boogie Woogie as well as One Eye Open.

[ Nils Nuernberg ] – Dustbin Boogie Woogie is crazy. Love it. That hypnotic break goes down really well. Can’t wait to play it out! Quality release again.

[ Moodymanc ] – Wacky aceness! Proper house music!!!

[ Jason Hodges ] – This is fresh to death, good job guys!

[ Tom Budden ] – One Eye Open is the one for me!

[ MANIK ] – Nice one guys! Solid stuff as always. Dustbin Boogie Woogie would be great during the peak of my set…and One Eye Open is dope too!

[ Scope ] – Raw groovy Chi-town shizzle, just the way i like it!

[ Pete Dafeet ] – Another great WCY record – Van Gogh’s Ear is my fave on first listen, but I’m guessing One Eye Open destroys it at peak time

[ Mijk van Dijk ] – Always loved the organic grooves of Mazi and Justin. This EP is another fine example. They wonderfully capture the intimate warm atmosphere of a smoky jazz club. Van Gogh’s Ear + One Eye Open are my favourites here.

[ Phil Weeks ] – YESSSSSS DOPE! WILL ROCK THANKS GUYS!

[ Ben Murphy (DJmag) ] – Wicked stuff!

[ Luna City Express ] – Dustin Boogie Woogie and Van Gogh’s Ear are my picks. Will play for sure!

Fresh Meat is proud to announce the success of its first live experiment! On November 21st 2009 our agents Mazi Namvar and Justin Long A.K.A. Wasted Chicago Youth deployed to the Smart Bar on an assignment of audio mass destruction. The mission was to return to grass roots and apply guerrilla techniques in recording two DJ mixes that would exclude any artificial intelligence. This recording would not compromise Human for the Machine.

The manifesto was to capture the synergy between music selector and music enthusiast while lost in the vortex of ‘Party’. Due to the growing infestation of computer programs that are too often abused in the DJ booth, many ears have been robbed of sonic colors that come from the hands of bona fide audio painters – technicians mixing in phase and accessing primitive sub-processes in the brain to connect subconsciously with the House Mother Beat.. Justin and Mazi’s blueprint was to use two turntables, a Funktion One sound system and a mixer while armed with an arsenal of music from the likes of Traxx, Nathan Drew Larsen, Spencer Parker, DJ Sneak, M.in, Bearweasel, Marc Romboy, Kink, Kris Wadsworth, Michal Ho, Brett Johnson, Dyed Soundorom, Shonky and other phonic soldiers. Microphones were judiciously placed around the venue to seize the rapture of the crowd.

On the night all elements fell into place. While biological life forms fused together in dance; emotion and audio were captured successfully. The mission was accomplished!

Now Fresh Meat presents the results of that experiment in four iterations. First, all separate tracks used in the mix are made available in full DJ friendly glory in two volumes. Next we present “The Mixes” complete with room ambiance and crowd jubilation. Finally we have the iTunes exclusive Bonus Edition which includes twenty nine selections from the mix and both sets in their entirety. Wasted Chicago Youth fighting audio crime one gig at a time!
