Greg Dowling and Shane Johnson have been playing records in public since the late 1980s. Their residency at Ireland’s longest running and best known house night, Sweat at Sir Henry’s in Cork, spanned more than a decade and influenced a generation of Irish clubbers and DJs. Since finishing Sweat in 2001, Fish Go Deep’s travels have taken them to clubs across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and throughout the US and Canada. During that time, they have been busy creating original House music in an emotive and signature style. Fish Go Deep releases have appeared on labels like Brique Rouge, Chez Music, Defected, NRK, Innervisions, Strictly Rhythm and Gourmet Recordings. Fish Go Deep released two EPs on Gourmet. As neither project is available any longer we thought this was the ideal time to put together our favorite tracks from those EPs. We reached out to Greg and Shane and successfully licensed four tracks from the Gourmet EPs for an outing on Fresh Meat. Here for your playing, listening and dancing pleasure are newly remastered versions of “Music’s Got Me”, “Music’s Dubbed Me”, “Follow”, and “2 Dings”. All four tracks are prime examples of Fish Go Deep’s timeless production style. In contrast to so many overwrought and quickly outdated tracks, these have remained as alive and vital as the day they were penned. These cuts don’t belong to any hyphenated sub-genre or passing fad. This is unassuming music written out of a necessity to create, designed to induce joy and movement.

Brodanse is the musical partnership of brothers Austen and Scott Smart. Their first EP for Fresh Meat comes on the heels of their mood heavy “Fire Night” track which appeared on “When Bad People Cook Good Food Volume 3″ out in January of this year. The two originals on this EP were deemed dance floor gold by FMR staff on first listen. The groove oriented soundscapes of “Become Someone” and “Around Us” sound modern yet informed by a house tapestry that runs decades deep. For two young gentlemen just getting started, Scott and Austen know their house music idioms. There is an assured cadence to the music of Brodanse, conveyed in part by a burly barrage of kicks, compressed snares and insistent basslines. Fresh Meat recruited a hard working young DJ in the Chicago scene, Max Jacobson, to remix “Become Someone” and after weeks of diligent work Max turned in what we feel is some of his best work. His thick, punchy version is built on a foundation of intricately swinging percussion, layered angular basslines, sprightly effects and swathes of subtle atmosphere.

Nathan Drew Larsen and Mazi spent several months working with a variety of artists to prepare the third volume of this compilation album and house mix, which focuses on the expressive and deep sound of Fresh Meat Records. Henry Miller wrote, “if we are always arriving and departing, it is also true that we are eternally anchored. One’s destination is never a place but rather a new way of looking at things.” “When Bad People Cook Good Food Volume Three” continues the eclectic deep house tradition of Fresh Meat, this time exploring connections and perspectives between the past, present and future of the Chicago based label.

Volume Three includes tracks selected from the catalog, new material and, for the first time in the series, tracks licensed from other labels. There are five new songs; “New Beginnings” by The Cushion, “Good Night from Chicago” by Local Talk artist Kindimmer, “Fire Night” by British duo Brodanse, “Ticket Movin’” by South African Terrence Pearce and “Architecture” by mysterious act Frozen Music. The album also features music by American Midwest stalwarts Derrick Carter, Chez Damier, Joshua Iz, and Alexander East. Tracks like Carter’s Club mix of “Jest 4 Me” and Joshua and Chez’ “Sentimental Love” link effortlessly with cuts created by the younger artists, weaving a tapestry between Fresh Meat’s inspirations and future paths.

Tunes licensed from third parties include Larsen’s remixes for All About and Brown Eyed Boyz. Both versions are bumping machine music workouts heavy with melody, melancholy and emotion. Audio Soul Project remixes have been licensed from Smoke City and Vizual Records. The remixes are standout examples of the elemental yet refined sound ASP has developed in recent times. For added spice, MANIK’s chunky remix of “Call of Grace” (originally by ASP) is also included on this album, previously only available on vinyl.

Alexander East has been a friend and creative force in my life since the late 90s. The first record of his I heard was “Hazy Shade Of Love” pressed as a 10″ inch on Underground Construction. A year after I head that single, I became the A&R for Afterhours Records. I remember getting a demo of 7 tracks from Alexander that blew me away so forcefully, the next day I walked into the label manager’s office and told her we had to sign every track on the demo. She asked if I thought we’d recoup our money and I responded that it did not matter – whether the project went gold or didn’t sell a single copy we, as a self respecting House Music label, had to put it out because it was magic. Through the years, Alexander and I have built a relationship as friends, fellow musicians and like minded creative beings. He has continued to send me music and I have released several of his projects on labels like Gourmet and Simple Soul. We collaborated on my first Audio Soul Project album for NRK and my second one released here on Fresh Meat. Back in 2000 Alexander sent me a song called “Jest 4 Me”. I loved it instantly. We originally released it on Afterhours pressed as a single sided vinyl 12″ with a black and white photo on the A-side and no text on the label. In 2001 we asked Derrick Carter to remix the song; he accepted turning in my favorite remixes he has ever done – Derrick took magic and made from it more magic. I own several copies of Alexander’s original version of “Jest 4 Me” and Derrick’s remixes. I have never stopped playing the song in my DJ sets.

A few months ago, while surfing the web, I realized the original and Derrick’s versions of “Jest 4 Me” are not available in any shops. After a quick conference between the crew, we at Fresh Meat decided to re-release this classic. We reached out to AE and DC acquiring both their blessings and got to work, putting together a digital release. So, for your music consuming pleasure, we present the original version, both of Derrick’s released mixes and the unreleased Derrick Carter Club all lovingly re-mastered. Music like this has kept me excited about House for the last 20 years. “Jest 4 Me” gets fresher with every play. Thanks AE. Thanks DC.

Gio’s back!

Up next on Fresh Meat are three tracks by Italian producer and DJ Giovanni Damico from White Rabbit Recordings. We have been big fans of Damico since releasing his “When It Was Fresh” EP on Fresh Meat last year. Damico’s tracks are unrefined, stripped-back and funky. His way of working and aesthetic harken back to the golden era early-90s house productions, but his sound is far from retro. All three tracks featured here are produced in Damico’s playful and intoxicating style.

The EP opener, “Get In The Spirit” literally commands the dancer to do just that. An elemental groove provides the backbone for the earthy vocals on this jam. The second track, “Fanu Bob” incorporates short melodic samples cycling back and forth between various instrumental refrains and vocal passages. The EP closes with “Dirty Disc,” a thick bass and drum workout using beautifully timed sparse melodies and psychedelic elements.

Paying homage to the hypnotic groove…

After a brief hiatus, we’re back. The “Feel Factory” EP is by new breed Chicago producers Max Jacobson and Dave Powers. Max has been DJing around town at some of our favorite spots and organizes undergrounds and private afterhours. Dave, a professional musician and music instructor also DJs, throws parties and performs live with his jazz trio. Max and Dave’s songs are out on Akbal Music, Klectik and Fade, and they have forthcoming releases on Tanzbar Musik / Workbench and Snubb Records. “Feel Factory’s” title track is slow-burning and earthy with great changes. “Don’t Let It” combines Powers’ jazz licks with an elegant classic U.S. house groove. The last two tracks get more psychedelic. For their first remix in years, Nathan and Mazi work the machines over “Don’t Let It,” adding tape echoes, MPC programming, a string machine and other vintage synths. The EP ends with “Dos”, a tracky cut with a low vibe and warehouse rhythms. We think this is future house that knows its history.

The Cushion (Scott Brandon) is a dance music artist who works from Chicago. We know him from parties and mutual friends, but did not know his music until recently. Scott’s music reflects his roots. He grew up near Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan and moved to Chicago several years ago. Scott is one of those musician/DJ introverts who creates cerebral house that really works on the dance floor. Both tracks featured here are musical and have moving rhythm sections. Scott’s relatively quiet years spent in the studio (he has a release on Spectral) and time spent DJing around the midwest have helped him develop a focused sound, reflected in the songs on this release. In an unfortunate turn of events, the unmixed audio for both tracks were lost.  As a result, Mazi’s (Audio Soul Project) snappy edit uses whole sections from the original song.

Have It All Dub proved to be the most popular track on Audio Soul Project’s LP “Hip Shake Heartache” from earlier this year. The idea for the track originally came from an R&B acapella. For the album “dub” mix the vocals were stripped down. Here, for the first time, we’re making the full vocal ‘Bootleg Version’ available. The music on this rendition is an expanded take on the one from the album, making room for the emotional vocals. This song is made for those deep house DJs who still covet the human voice in their sets.

The first remixes are by Fred Everything. On his ‘Remix 1’ crisp and modern drum machine beats set into motion layers of atmospheric synthesizer work. This is Fred in top form retriggering the vocals and creating a sophisticated groove completely true to his signature sound. The music builds organically into an airy breakdown, allowing the scat vocals to open up and shine after which things return to the already established funky flow. Mr. Everything’s second remix moves all of his previously established elements into moodier territory – the smooth synths are filtered down, the sub bass more submerged and the central breakdown goes into Basic Channel territory complete with echoing analog keys, DX-7 like bass swells, space sound effects and that dub snare we all know so well.

Belfast based Ric McClelland aka Scope completes this remix package putting together a 90s influenced Todd Terry conjuring remix of Have It All Dub. The classic “Jumpin’” beats get refreaked and fused to a new bass line, percussive organ and fat, bright stabs. Programmed percussion, a droning high pitched string and sparse vocals inject just the right amount of smokiness into this otherwise straight up peak time affair.

ILike a fourth dimensional creature experiencing past and future simultaneously, Eleftherios Kousakis (aka Elef) has created music for Fresh Meat drawing from the traditions of House music and reaching towards its future. Elef’s “Haus EP” is a three tracker that will be pressed on pristine vinyl followed thereafter by global digital release. The tracks on this EP connect Detroit and Chicago influences to Elef’s own German roots.

The opener “Haus” is in many ways a bread and butter American Midwest acid house jam. Three lines of Roland’s TB303 lovingly glide over repeating filtered electric piano and ghostly background strings. The infamous TR909 ride bunches together an undulating mid range heavy rhythm track, with cymbals played one tightly against the next, snares juxtaposed to each other falling in long decaying arcs and the kick drum scoring each measure into 4 spacious packets of insistent motion. In the second half, a slim dry synth stab completes the conversation between bass, piano, string and drums.

“Weird Situation” was the last track Elef wrote for this EP and is our favorite. The memorable, emotionally deep vibe of “Weird Situation” uses square acid bass waves this time bubbling over modulating organ chords. Mechanized closed high hats swing wide ‘round a clipped kick and clap combination and reversed detuned cymbals. Heavily reverberated vocal snippets provide the sole human connection to an otherwise pure exercise in machine soul.

“Things of Tomorrow” closes out Elef’s EP. Resonating elongated synth stabs and playfully intermittent plastic bass bumps seem to tease an eerie female vocalist to shout atop jazzy lo-fi drums. These are emblematic motor city soundscapes, whether you’re talking Detroit or Stuttgart. “Things of Tomorrow” predicts an immediate musical future which is direct and in your face; an ethic based on the visceral punch of dry automaton programming and intuitive human experimentation.
