It should be clear by now that Fresh Meat have no interest in techno as gestalt - while shades of Moodymann or Theo Parrish come to mind, Return Flight, the latest single from Chicago's Audio Soul Project, continues to explore Mazi’s unique take on contemporary deep house. In this emotive and highly-hypnotic track, Mazi’s characteristic Arp Odyssey performances and live percussions are prominent throughout – enough so, one might say that Mazi’s jeremiads conjure the early musings of Boris Blank. A reverence for that which is deep house is apparent, but with Return Flight, Mazi quietly eschews nostalgia in favor of discovery – referencing Chicago’s creative modalities while avoiding clichés. Return Flight is a stunning track whose harmonic ever-shifting melodic structure demonstrates Mazi’s particular knack for packaging memorable and beautifully produced songs into efficient tracks both for DJ and dance floor.

Two remixes of Return Flight are included in this notable package. The first comes courtesy of French maestro Julien Parisé. Besides running the brilliant Missive Recordings, Julien has been busy lately writing and remixing for Alex Kidd’s Imprime Records and Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly label. In keeping with his recent work, Julien’s remix of Return Flight is a deceivingly minimal builder that hides many layers of intense rhythmic detail. Melodies and percussive elements materialize, come to the surface and glidingly disappear as the insistent FM bass line pumps through the track. Of course this remix is all about the dance floor and Julien’s dramatic arrangement delivers in spades.

Stuttgart native Alexander Maier takes the reigns for the second Return Flight remix. His recent work for Mood, Exun, Robotronic and Buzzin’ Fly have caught the attention of many and Alex’s remix for Fresh Meat will be no exception. The ‘Digital Age Kills Art’ remix amps up Return Flight’s danceability with a straight to the bone, no nonsense approach. Maier turns in the kind of top tiered techno-house hybrid perfect for a hyped-up peak-time set. His remix is sonically heavy but light on its feet - this nine plus minute jam is bristling with 303 acid lines, tweaking angular synth stabs and winding plastic synth arpeggios – not to mention plenty of melodic wit.
